One of the top experts and nationally recognized authorities on the taxation of mutual funds, Stephen is an accomplished attorney and Big 4 executive with over 30 years of experience in the mutual fund industry. He has extensive knowledge of the taxation issues associated with complex investments, investment strategies and fund governance, as well as a thorough understanding of the operational and business aspects of mutual fund complexes. In addition to playing an integral role in business decision-making in response to tax-related legislative and regulatory issues affecting the financial services industry, Stephen has also played an important role in the creation of regulations. He has testified before Congress and worked with Congressional, Treasury, IRS and SEC personnel on a variety of legislative and regulatory topics.

As an independent contractor working with the firm’s Investment Company Tax Group, Stephen addresses some of the most highly complex technical tax issues facing the registered funds industry. He consults on a variety of areas, including issuing tax opinions and technical memos, and helping to evaluate complex tax structures and security transactions for asset managers and their advisers. His deep expertise includes working with open- and closed-end mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), interval funds and business development companies.
