J. Michael Kolk, Cohen & Company

J. Michael Kolk, CPA, JD Partner Mike is the Partner-in-Charge of the firm's Tax Department. Most of Mike's professional services are concentrated in the area of advising owners of closely held businesses concerning a wide variety of tax areas including alternative minimum tax, carryovers, passive activities and capital gains. He is a past director of the Akron/Canton Chapter Ohio Society of CPAs and past President of the Akron Tax and Estate Planning Council. In 2004, he was the Case Western Reserve University Accountancy Department Alumnus of the Year. Mike has participated in the Leadership Ohio programs and he serves in various capacities with a number of Akron charities. Mike received his Bachelor's degree from Case Western Reserve University, where he is now a member of the Accounting Department Advisory Board. He went on to receive his Masters of Taxation from the University of Cincinnati and his J.D. from Cleveland State University. He has been a featured writer in both Taxation for Accountants and Taxation for Lawyers and contributed articles to The Tax Adviser and Inside Family Business. Mike has been a speaker at many tax institutes, seminars, and radio and television programs. Mike is a member of many professional organizations including the American Institute of CPAs, the Ohio Society of CPAs, Akron Tax Club, and Akron Tax and Estate Planning Council. Mike is a Board member of the Downtown Akron Partnership, which oversees Akron's First Night New Year's celebration and downtown development. Mike is currently serving on the Board of Leadership Akron and is also on the Board Finance Committee of Akron General Medical Center and the Cascade CDC. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame at West Geauga High School. A former collegiate basketball player, Mike not only organized the firm's Cleveland and Akron basketball teams, but was also responsible for the formation of the Cleveland Area CPA Basketball League. He and his wife, Joan, and their children, Jim and Michelle, live in Copley. Mike participates in a wide variety of sports activities and enjoys home improvement projects. He also has an extensive collection of license plates dating back to 1906.
